Astor represented Plymouth Sutton from 1919 to 1945. Her welcome from the male MPs was not warm: "Sometimes I used to doubt whether it was a privilege. When I stood up and asked questions ... I used to be shouted at for five or ten minutes at a time." She spent almost two years as the only woman in the House of Commons.
