In 1974, a small community of gay students at the University of Maine came together, formed the Wilde-Stein club, and helped initiate the decades-long effort to win rights for gay Mainers. Sturgis Haskins, who grew up in Sorrento in the 1940s and 50s, was one of the founders of that movement.
