Yesterday, we marked 109 years since the tragic Battle of the Nek began. The disasterous battle saw waves of men cut down by machine-gun and rifle fire as they attempted to reach enemy trenches. Major John Antill, who was in command of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade, rejected an initial proposal to call off the attack. The Nek was a vitally important position on the northern end of the ANZAC front line and the scene of a tragic attack by the 3rd Light Horse Brigade at dawn on 7 August 1915.
