Kodiak bears hanging out at the Fraser fish pass on the south end of Kodiak Island. The fish pass is designed to funnel red salmon from the river, past a waterfall and into Fraser lake. We travel there in late July early August to view the bears as they gather at the bottom of the contraption where it is easy to catch the salmon. Usually, there are moms, cubs and young bears here- as the large males have long since learned that they are the target of sport hunters and will avoid humans. #kodiak

Not doing so good. This Kodiak bear was walking the old game trail that cuts across our front yard yesterday when our dog intercepted him and held him at bay. We called our dog back to us and let him pass. Though the video is grainy, you can see that one side of his muzzle is torn off and that he’s pretty thin.
