More than 1,300 miles from the main Hawaiian Islands, Hōlanikū is a predator-free sanctuary: an 80,000-acre reef, a shallow lagoon, and small sandy islets. While conducting a shorebird survey on Hōlanikū (Kure Atoll), the Kure field team takes every opportunity to remove marine debris entanglement hazards along the shoreline. Each piece collected helps protect the native wildlife that depends on these beaches — from nesting seabirds to endangered monk seals. As the team works, they’re treated to a visit from a local pod of Naiʻa (Spinner Dolphins), a reminder of the vibrant marine life that thrives in the protected waters surrounding the atoll. Enc
