High bluffs overlooking the Apalachicola River make Torreya one of Florida's most scenic places. The park is named for an extremely rare species of Torreya tree that only grows on the bluffs along the Apalachicola River. #LoveFL | VISIT FLORIDA

I recently visited Torreya State Park. The Torreya pine (Torreya taxifolia) is a critically endangered tree in the Yew family. It is only found on limestone cliffs along a short stretch of the Aapalachicola River. There is estimated to only be 200 left in the wild. Hiking along the trail I saw some native hardy palms as well. There’s an organization that is trying to save the Torreya pine @torreyakeepers. They sent me some seeds last year but I couldn’t get them to sprout. #endangeredplants #flo

Torreya Restoration! We are excited to announce that our FNPS TorreyaKeepers Project recently reintroduced Torreya taxifolia to the only known, naturally occurring site on the western side of the Apalachicola River. The small population that once existed at this exact location succumbed to the introduced fungal pathogen, Fusarium torreyae, that has now afflicted all known populations of this very rare and endangered conifer. Only a small number of trees now persist in the wild. We were contacted

A new fungal pathogen is spreading in Florida: Parvodontia relampaga, which causes Relampago Blight. Mycologists Katy Dietz and Matthew Smith from the UF Plant Pathology Department joined FNPS Director of North Florida Programs, Lilly Anderson-Messec, in the field to collect samples of this new pathogen. Lilly first began noticing this fungus spreading in the ravines she surveys for Torreya taxifolia in 2023, and she has documented it on a number of herbaceous and woody species, including the en

Florida fall comes in December!Fall colors were in full swing on our TorreyaKeepers survey this Monday. Sourwood, American Beech, Swamp Chestnut Oak, White Oak, Alabama Laurel Cherry, Mockernut Hickory, Red Maple, Florida Maple, Chalk Maple and many more species were finally in their full fall form. We found 4 new Torreya as well! The cuttings we collect will be shipped to @atlantabgconservation to be grown at their ex-situ conservation nursery. This ensures the genetic diversity of this #federa

One of Florida’s treasures: Ashe Magnolia, Magnolia ashei, is endemic to the Florida Panhandle. This small deciduous tree has an open, spreading form and huge, light-green leaves. It flowers in April with very fragrant, white blooms brushed with lavender to maroon highlights at the center. The large, dinner-plate-sized flowers reach up to 12 inches across! Its delicate and verdant leaves are large - up to 2 feet long! Once mature, Ashe Magnolia reaches 15-30ft tall and just as wide, preferring p

We received confirmation last week that the federal grants that fund our conservation work with Federally Endangered species such as Torreya taxifolia (Florida Torreya), Dicerandra cornutissima (Longspurred Balm), and Dicerandra modesta (Blushing Scrub Balm), has been rescinded. We were expecting this news since it was already announced that funding for Federally Endangered Species Recovery Plans would be rescinded, but it is still hard news to receive. If you value this work, and are able to do
