Defending champion Coco Gauff revived her chances of advancing at the WTA Finals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jasmine Paolini.
Gauff lost the first set against Sabalenka, when she would ordinarily dig in for a three-set marathon. At this event, she needed to sprint.
Coco Gauff’s season came to an end after she exited the WTA Finals in the round-robin stage. It was a disappointing title defence for the American, though it was not entirely unexpected given how up and down her form has been this year.
The third-seeded Coco Gauff looked to defend her WTA Finals title against fifth-seeded Jessica Pegula. It was a rematch of the Wuhan Open final from last month. After letting the second set slip away in a tiebreak, Pegula defeated Gauff in three sets: 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2.
Gauff won the 2024 WTA Tour Finals, also in Riyadh, beating Zheng Qinwen 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2). The current world No. 3 won four of her five matches last year, becoming the youngest champion since Maria Sharapova in 2004.
