Storms that ramp up so quickly complicate forecasting and make it harder for government agencies to plan for emergencies. Hurricane Erick, a Pacific storm that made landfall June 19 in Oaxaca, Mexico, also strengthened rapidly, doubling in intensity in less than a day.
"Heavy rainfall is possible on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, with potential for a maximum of 4 inches," NHC said Tuesday.
Hurricane Erin became this season’s first hurricane on Friday and first major hurricane on Saturday, peaking at a Category 5 hurricane with peak sustained winds of 160 mph, gusts up to 195 mph, and a minimum central pressure of 915 mb.
It is all eyes on Hurricane Erin as the storm sweeps through the Atlantic Ocean bringing impacts to North Carolina.
Erin is the first hurricane to develop over the Atlantic this year, and meteorologists are closely tracking its path and forecast.
