Inothewayurthinkin, a 15/2 shot trained by Gavin Cromwell and ridden by Mark Walsh, won the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday and denied odds-on favourite Galopin Des Champs a third successive victory.

Galopin Des Champs was not at his best, but by no means was it a poor performance. He finished six lengths back in second and achieved an RPR of 175. It underlined how difficult it is to win three Gold Cups in a row.

So, not only has Willie Mullins won the first four races of the day, won the leading trainer gong again and matched his record of 10 wins at the Festival, he’s about to go for a dollop of history in the Gold Cup. As weeks go, that’s half decent.

Inothewayurthinkin galloped on strongly up the hill to deny Galopin Des Champs a famous Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup hat-trick.

The odds-on favorite had finished about seven lengths in front of Inothewayurthinkin in the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown last year, but was rarely travelling or jumping with his usual fluency here and could not respond as Walsh sent the winner into the lead between the final two fences.

The unpredictability of horse racing was hammered home as instead of joining Golden Miller, Cottage Rake, Arkle and Best Mate as three-time winners of the Boodles Gold Cup, Galopin Des Champs joined a succession of beaten odds-on shots at this year’s Festival after he was put firmly in his place by Inothewayurthinkin.
