During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump promised to end federal taxation of Social Security retirement benefits.

The U.S. government agency that provides benefits to tens of millions of older Americans plans to cut 7,000 workers, it announced on Friday, as part of the Trump administration's plan to slash the size of the federal workforce.

Several Democratic lawmakers, former government officials and advocacy groups have raised issues with Trump's handling of the Social Security Administration (SSA), which is responsible for paying benefits. It comes after confirmation from Elon Musk that Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) officials would be conducting an audit.

A new analysis reveals that the policy change would mainly benefit high-earning retirees or those close to retirement.

The agency said in a statement posted to its website that it had notified employees that it will "soon" implement "significant workforce reductions."

A plan like this will result in field office closures that will hit seniors in rural communities the hardest," one lawmaker said.
