Illinois' assault weapons ban was ruled unconstitutional by a U.S. District Judge, a decision that will be appealed by the state's Attorney General.

A federal judge in Illinois has ruled the state's blanket ban on assault weapons is unconstitutional and violates the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution.

The decision comes as a federal appeals court in the state last month upheld the assault weapon ban — which was passed last year following a mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade in the suburbs of Chicago — arguing that the ban constitutes a reasonable limit on the Second Amendment.

Officials in the state have already filed an appeal after the Trump-appointed judge’s ruling, which cites recent Supreme Court decisions on the Second Amendment.

The ruling increases the likelihood that the conservative-majority Supreme Court will one day consider whether the Second Amendment protects AR-15s.
