A significant storm system that threatens the South, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic with severe weather — and heavy snow in the Midwest — is set to hit less than a week after NOAA saw layoffs that affected about 800 staff.

The terminations come days before a potential severe weather outbreak in the southeastern U.S. — and just months ahead of the next Atlantic hurricane season.

Hundreds of NOAA and National Weather Service employees were laid off Thursday in the latest round of federal workforce cuts under President Donald Trump’s administration.
