A notorious French fugitive who staged a deadly escape that killed two guards last year was extradited Tuesday from Romania to France, days after his arrest in Bucharest ended a nine-month international manhunt.

If Russian president Vladimir Putin, who invaded Ukraine in 2022, is not stopped, "he will certainly go to Moldova and perhaps further, to Romania," French president Emmanuel Macron warned in an interview with several French newspapers quoted by Le Monde.

A suspected gangland killer described as France's "public enemy number one" was formally indicted on a slew of organised crime charges including murder before an investigating magistrate in Paris late Tuesday after his extradition from Romania.
