The San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS San Diego arrived in Sasebo, Japan, this week as the Navy's newest warship to be forward deployed to Asia.

The USS San Diego (LPD-22), which is the fourth ship of the U.S. Navy to have San Diego in its name, will be deployed to Sasebo, Japan for a decade, military officials said.

The San Diego, commissioned in 2012, is three years younger than the Green Bay. The Navy in 2021 awarded BAE Systems a $90.2 million contract for a yearlong modernization period for the San Diego.
