The World Health Organization has released data showing that at least 431 people have been diagnosed with an unknown illness in two remote villages in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The World Health Organization warns an outbreak of an unidentified illness in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has spread to more than 419 cases and caused at least 53 deaths. The disease causes symptoms consistent with hemorrhagic fever,

The disease, which has infected more than 400 people and killed 53 within a few weeks, “poses a significant public health threat,” the World Health Organization said.

The outbreak began in January, with 419 cases recorded so far, and comes after another mystery illness killed 143 in December

World Health Organization officials said the outbreak appeared to originate from a village where three children died after reportedly eating a bat carcass.

The fast-spreading mystery illness has killed scores of people, with nearly half dying within 48 hours of showing symptoms, the World Health Organization said.
