When the top fell away, the topper began attaching metal rigging to the tree, now called a spar. Guy wires bolted to the rigging anchored the spar in place on the ground.

It’s a rare sight today to see a spar tree in a timber harvesting area, but you can see them at any loggers' sports shows.
