Israel's prime minister has accused his Australian counterpart of having "betrayed Israel" and "abandoned" Australia's Jewish community, after days of growing strain between the two countries. Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that history would remember Anthony Albanese "for what he is: a weak politician".

Australia and Israel have taken diplomatic efforts against each other as tensions between the two nations over the war in Gaza grow.

Netanyahu's comment followed Israel's revocation of the visas of Australian diplomats to the Palestinian Authority on Monday, after a decision by Canberra to recognise a Palestinian state and cancel the visa of an Israeli lawmaker.

Protesters in Israel escalated their ongoing campaign on Sunday to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza.

Israel is studying Hamas' response to a proposal for a 60-day ceasefire and release of half the hostages still held in Gaza, two Israeli officials said on Tuesday, although one source reiterated that all Israeli captives must be freed for the war to end.

Hundreds of thousands of Israelis took to the streets on Sunday, launching a nationwide grassroots strike and widespread protests to demand the government secure the release of 50 hostages still in Gaza.

The cancellations by Israel followed “Australia’s decisions to recognise a ‘Palestinian state’ and against the backdrop of Australia’s unjustified refusal to grant visas to a number of Israeli figures”,

Israel’s foreign minister said on Monday he had revoked the visas of Australian diplomats to the Palestinian Authority, following a decision by Canberra to recognise a Palestinian state and cancel an Israeli lawmaker's visa.

Israel said on Monday it would revoke visas held by Australian representatives to the Palestinian Authority, in response to Canberra’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state next month. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said Australian Ambassador Ralph King has been formally notified of the step.
