A proposal to deter states from regulating artificial intelligence for a decade was soundly defeated in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, thwarting attempts to insert the measure into President Donald Trump’s big bill of tax breaks and spending cuts.

Senate GOP leaders worked through the night to try to win over party holdouts to the legislation, namely Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK). The chamber is still in the midst of a vote-a-rama, where amendments are put up for a vote, and it’s unclear when a final vote will be called.

Vice President JD Vance provided the tie-breaking vote to get Trump's bill across the finish line. It now must go back to the House for approval.
