The possible change is one in a series of recent TSA programs that loosen restrictions at security checkpoints as screening technology has advanced.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has launched Gateside by TSA PreCheck, a program that allows eligible airport visitors without a plane ticket to go through security lines and access airport terminals beyond security checkpoints.

The change could end a long-standing rule at certain airports for passengers who opt in to a five-year PreCheck membership.

Gateside by TSA PreCheck is a free offering for TSA PreCheck members alongside those with Known Traveler Numbers, or KTNs. Those interested can apply for a gateside pass between one and three days before their planned terminal visit at one of 13 airports already operating the program.

Cost: $78 application fee; membership is valid for five years after you complete your interview and receive approval. You can also gain TSA PreCheck access through Global Entry, which costs more but includes expedited passport control. Some credit cards will reimburse the application fee for either program.
