Voting for the first phase has begun in 43 out of 81 seats in Jharkhand. Bypolls are underway in Kerala, Rajasthan, Gujarat and West Bengal.

In the 2019 assembly elections, the contest was close, with Hemant Soren-led JMM winning 30 seats and the BJP securing 25, down from 37 in 2014. The JMM-Congress-RJD alliance won a comfortable majority with 47 seats.

The polling for Jharkhand's first phase began at around 7:00 am, with voters across 43 constituencies in 15 districts casting their ballots. The results will determine the fate of 683 candidates, including 73 women.
