The first word of the truce came from President Trump, who announced that the two countries had reached a "full and immediate ceasefire," after talks mediated by the U.S.

The military operations chiefs of India and Pakistan held talks by phone on Monday evening, broadcaster CNN-News18 said, two days after the nuclear-armed neighbours reached a ceasefire agreement following intense fighting last week.

As tensions ratcheted up over the last week of fighting, Pakistan did not consider deploying nuclear warheads to strike India, the country’s foreign minister Ishaq Dar told CNN on Monday.

India has denied targeting Pakistan’s alleged nuclear installations as the federal territory of Jammu and Kashmir observed the first peaceful night in days following a temporary truce between the two nations after days of military escalation.
